Monster Under the Couch

Years 3-4

One-off workshop

In this workshop students are asked to imagine how a hungry monster living under their couch might look, sound and act. The first epic encounter with the monster will be written as a narrative poem, with students guided through key aspects of the form and the use of various poetic devices. Through the use of repetition and simile, students will describe their monster and consider the ultimate question, what ARE they doing under there?

Join us between 11am-3pm on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of December at Parramatta Female Factory Institutions Precinct (1 Fleet Street, North Parramatta) for a powerful exhibition titled Memory River.  Throughout this year, Story Factory and the custodians of the Female Factory Precinct have worked with Elders, Kaytetye, Anmatyerr and Eastern Arrernte cross-disciplinary artist Carmen Glynn-Braun, and young writers from local high schools to understand, express and reinterpret the stories of the Female Factory through creative writing and art.  As you wander through the grounds, you will discover recordings of stories by students as they responded to the pre- and post-colonial history of this contested site. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional, experienced workshop facilitator who can work independently to shape and improve our in- school programming.  They will have a passion for nurturing creativity and building skills in their peers, and in young people from diverse backgrounds. Candidates must be a qualified teacher with at least five years teaching experience, and experience managing people. They will be highly creative and adaptable, and love bringing out the best in their team.  The Senior Program Manager will be a key part of Story Factory’s senior management group, providing input into both day-to-day decision making and long-term strategy for the organisation. We are running a very exciting multilingual public writing project and we want YOU to be a part of it!  In a Flash invites people to write flash fiction (very short stories - less than 100 words) in response to writing by emerging and established Australian authors.
