PITTER PATTER by Lauren

“HEY COME BACK!”

His whimpering cries mimicked the increasingly tempestuous rain as the bitterness of his face slowly etched into a desolate, wavering frown. I slightly tilted my head, squinting to distinguish the rather tall silhouette in this blurry weather.

“BOBBY?” This kid. How dare he come back after stealing my PB&J toastie. After many hours of constructing my beautiful creation, he had the audacity to eat and see me again? I understood he was probably starving, but he could’ve at least left a corner for me.

A great sense of guilt sweeps over me, sucking my energy with it. Taking a deep breath, I shifted the umbrella to my right hand side.

“You owe me one, this is my final straw”, painting a luminous grin on my face.

 “Gotcha Steph, I will.”

Gazing at my sweaty hand grasping the metal handle, he suddenly pauses his stride.

“I’ll hold it, this is me owing you.”

He’s doing that dumb smile again, eyebrows raised up to the heavens.

I whacked his left shoulder. “SHUT UP, this doesn’t count!”

Snatching the umbrella, he glances back at me with a cheeky smirk and bolts off.

“Nothing has changed, huh.”
