The Racial Gate

By Merna, Year 9

“We don’t want you here.”  “Stay away.”

I collapse at the things they say.

The school kids live in freedom and run around

My youthful imagination plummets to the ground

The flashbacks of near death as I sit in the playground

I panic at the sound of sirens, hesitant to turn around

My emotions crumble when I hear that sound

The nightmares of us refugees being found.

They tell me to fix my country, as if it is some joke

The blistering snow and cold nights filled with smoke

The escape through danger and the laws we broke.

The unforgettable sights that remain with dread

Their brainwashed minds and the foolish things said.

North Korea, the country that society loves to hate

Their xenophobic comments make me deteriote

My cultural background has brought me to this mental state

My feelings and hardships are forever trapped behind this racial gate.
