Teacher Professional Development - Creating Community

  • Story Factory Redfern 176 Redfern St Redfern NSW 2016 Australia (map)

Community writing projects provide schools with the opportunity to engage parents/carers in student learning and for students to create complex real-life texts that require problem solving, and critical and creative thinking. Participants will be guided through the planning of a community writing project, including the development and implementation of a wide variety of teaching activities and strategies that engage students across the full range of abilities and backgrounds.

Participants will critically examine the development and implementation of a community writing project (Home - Mapping the Stories of Redfern) undertaken by the Story Factory. This investigation will include reference to student activities, community engagement, planning, and student agency in education.

The use of Home - Mapping the Stories of Redfern (Story Factory, 2014) as a model text will also provide participants with access to a new, original text to be used in the classroom to broaden student understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. A collection of activities designed for use with Home - Mapping the Stories of Redfern will be introduced during the course and each participant will receive an ebook copy of Home.
