Want to stretch yourself? Like the idea of being published?

For some young people who have discovered the joy of writing in our workshops, or who have started exploring creative writing in their own time, it’s clear that they want more, and can do more - but how? and what? That’s where our Year of Poetry and Year of the Novella programs come in.

These programs are designed to support teenaged writers to generate ideas, learn about and experiment with various prose and poetry forms, WRITE, edit - and publish their own poetry anthology or novella.

Working closely with our Chief Storytellers though the year-long programs, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve!

Our Year of Poetry and Year of the Novella programs, like all Story Factory programs, are aimed at young people whose voices are not heard as loudly as they should be, due to external circumstances. They provide opportunities, in particular, for young people who are Indigenous, from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and who may live in low socioeconomic communities, to explore their potential through writing.

Year of Poetry

In the Year of Poetry, students will develop their skills in a range of different poetic forms, building a body of work and finding their own voice.

Over the year students will read and discuss poems by exciting and innovative writers, the poems will be used as inspiration for the student's own writing with focused writing activities used to help build a body of work. Weekly workshops will provide students with a safe space to discuss, write and workshop their poetry. This program embraces poetry in all its forms, from the sonnet to the slam and everything in between. We'll work with you to help make your poetry the best it can be!

All students in this program will be working toward the publication of a chapbook collection of poetry. Everything about this program is designed to provide students with a real life publishing experience; students will work with experienced editors and cover designers to create a polished, unique and genuine publication.

Year of the Novella

In the Year of the Novella, students will develop their own novella from concept to planning and delivery of the final work.

Over the year students will read and discuss novels by exciting and innovative writers, which will be used as inspiration for the student's own writing. Working closely with our storytellers, the students will explore the narrative form, writing both independently and at the Story Factory.

All students in this program will be working toward the publication of a novella. Everything about this program is designed to provide students with a real life publishing experience; students will work with experienced editors and cover designers to create a polished, unique and genuine publication.

Weekly workshops will provide students with a safe space to discuss, write and workshop their prose. At the end of each term there will be opportunities to celebrate milestones achieved, and at the end of the year the final novella will be published!
