My Brother’s Love

By Elijah, Year 10

We mourn our favourite things, like the experiences with our brother.

I can smell the dinner, laughter and comfort.

The untasteful hoodie, smelling of Katy Perry perfume.

The worn old couch stained with our food.

The wooden necklace baring his truth.

We always giggle together, embracing every moment.

I always joked around, trying to eat his dinner.

He gave me me his headphones; a song played,

a bittersweet memory of Shallow by Lady Gaga.

Together he stands by me everyday,

I watch the memory fade into dust

like a star imploding.

That day he told me he loved me, calling

“roo”.

Little did we know I’d never see him again.

This poem, My Brother’s Love, by Elijah was written as a part of Snapshots. Think of the small moments in time that are significant in our lives, or that contribute to the story of who we are. How do you capture that moment on camera? In words? Who takes the picture? What happens outside the frame? What stories do they tell? In this workshop series, students will consider the relationship between photography and poetry and create short poems, vignettes and flash fiction pieces inspired by the work of a range of local and international writers, and visual and photographic artists, as well their own photographs.
