Wow. I’m the 2016 NSW Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards.

Last night, I was thrilled and humbled to be named the 2016 NSW Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards. I was also extremely surprised, as my fellow nominees are an incredible bunch and would have been excellent winners.

Huge congrats to Lana and Roger Borg (who are feeding the homeless near Penrith); Dr Anne Bunde-Birouste (who’s making the lives of refugees better through football); and Lucy Haslam (who has survived the heartbreak of her son’s death and still campaigns to legalise cannabis for medicinal purposes and help others in his situation).

Congrats to all the other winners and nominees last night, and huge thanks to everyone at the Sydney Story Factory: our board, our incredible staff, our phalanx of awesome volunteers, our community partners and, most especially, our students, who make our lives better every day. This award is for all of you.
