Story Factory

Our Year of Poetry and Year of the Novella programs are Story Factory’s two most involved and rewarding programs. These programs provide high school-aged writers with a community of peers, a support network of professionals and the chance to publish their very own novella or poetry collection.

At Story Factory, we know that writing is a commitment. While it is deeply satisfying, it can also be challenging on a number of levels. There is nothing to fear, though: we’re here to help you build your skills and support you every step of the way.

All you need to do is show up. Bring your passion and curiosity.

Here’s how it works:

1. Register your interest to apply for one of our 2026 programs via our application form;
2. Attend free, weekly after-school writing sessions (4.30pm to 6.00pm) at our inspiring workshop space in Parramatta from February until December 2026;
3. Collaborate with our amazing Storyteller team to bring your ideas to life;
4. Professionally publish your very own book, which will be for sale on Story Factory’s website and available for anyone to read!
   

Throughout the year you will develop your ideas and refine your voice as a writer. You’ll learn how to set goals and tell stories, discover techniques for editing and drafting that make your words stronger. During professional author visits, you’ll get tips and advice from a diverse pool of industry figures. Got an idea for the cover art or the blurb on the back? We want to hear about that too!

At the end of these year-long programs, you’ll be the author of a professionally published novella or collection of poetry. We’ll also host an official book launch and book signing to celebrate your achievements — and you’ll receive an advance from sales.
