At Story Factory, we believe all Australian young people, no matter their background, should be given opportunities to develop the literacy skills that will allow them to flourish and shape a positive future.
Our programs are delivered exclusively in areas with a Family and Occupational Index (FOEI) above 100, with high populations of young people who are Indigenous or from non-English speaking backgrounds - those most at risk of poor literacy, leaving school early, and significantly reduced life outcomes.
We not only work with young people, but with their teachers, schools, family members, and communities to build a supportive, sustainable learning environment unique to their specific needs. From one-off workshops to year-long school residencies and Teacher Professional Learning programs, we have something for everyone.

Schools and community organisations are invited to bring young people to our Redfern or Parramatta centres for one-off workshops that burst at the seams with energy and creativity.
Students might find themselves planning the movie of their life, exploring the world from a bug’s eye view, creating mini magazines about memes or zombie survival plans, or exploring poetry through the legend of the robot birds.
Young people will work with our volunteers to create something amazing, all under the guidance of our expert Storytellers.
A fantastic introduction to the Story Factory model for young people, teachers, and supervisors.
We commit to work with a school for at least a year, working across multiple grades, to create a culture of writing.
What’s better than a confident writer? A whole school of them!
Our Residency programs allow the Story Factory and schools to work together to create a culture of creative writing within a school, with programs throughout the year targeting different year groups or specific student groups. Depending on the school’s needs, we can work on extending certain students through unique creative activities or supporting others through targeted literacy programs - all delivered with the out-there creativity and enthusiasm that make Story Factory workshops special.
We’ve seen the pay-off of working with whole school communities, with young people clambering for the opportunity to take part in workshops and create publications and projects they can be proud of.
School residencies are only open to schools where we have already done at least one term of workshops.
We work with students across a school term to create a substantial piece of writing.
Ever wanted to create a podcast? Write a collaborative movie script? Dive deep into poetry or explore and explode genre writing? Term long programs are a fantastic way for young people to build skills, confidence, and a substantial body of work over 6 to 8 weeks.
Our expert Storytellers can work with teachers and supervisors of young people to craft workshop programs that answer the specific needs of young people.
Workshops can take place at a school or at one of our two Story Factory centres in Redfern and Parramatta.
Special programs run across multiple schools with an exciting public outcome, from a book to a light installation.
Sometimes an idea is just too big, too crazy, too creative to be confined to one group of young people. That’s when our BIG Project programs come into play.
Whether it’s collecting the everyday experiences of hundreds of students across NSW, introducing contemporary art and creative process to students across Western Sydney, or crafting a new script for live performance that includes the ideas and writing of dozens of students. These programs often involve partnerships by leading creative institutes such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belvoir Theatre Company, and the Australian Centre of Photography.
If you’re looking for a truly creative way to challenge your students, and to introduce them to a world of creativity outside the classroom, get in touch today and find out which BIG Projects we have in the works.
