I Am

Written as part of Sunset in My Heart

I am, My grandparents bed in their room.

I am, the smell of Mediterranean food at home

I am, my gold necklace with my name on it

I am, The shades of bright pink that made up my childhood

I am, the noor on my brothers face in the morning

I am, my friends having fun and laughing

I am, the soft silky bed sheets after shaving

I am, lighthearted, caring and subjective

Sunsets are an ethereal way of ending the day. It is a creative way of leaving this world behind and ultimately opening up a new one. These moments allow me to relate to my best friend, with her name actually meaning light, Noor. She has been my friend since year 3. She loves sunsets and regularly posts them, I try to keep up but it just doesn’t compare. She ‘s really creative and expresses it through her passion and innovative ideas. She’s caring, thoughtful and empathetic. Whenever I grasp the chance to see her, I make it a top priority to cherish these moments with her, we watch wandavision, go to the park, eat out. Those moments are so important to me as long distance relationships tend to be difficult. But to have her continuously have my back makes her ray of sunshine, and even when she leaves, the sunset is even more beautiful.

Someone you were in the past

When I hung out with my friend at her house for the whole day.

Her Dad made us these chilli chicken burgers when I first came & we ate them talking about everything that has happened over the year as we go to different schools.

During this time, WandaVision was out & my friend had loved the Scarlett Witch since Year 6, we spent the day watching it in her room, and at the park. We got Maccas while at the park & enjoyed each other’s company as it would be another year until we would see each other again.

During that time I felt my happiest as I never really see her & we share so much in common that I never wanted the day to end.

It is such an important memory to cherish as friends are hard to keep that will be willing to have a long distance relationship, so to have that is important to cherish them.

Something that you value in the present

Something that I will continue to value in this period of time will be my siblings.

My mum always wanted 4 kids, so for me to have 3 younger siblings was a blessing but it took me a while to see it.

I would ride my first brother in my toy pram when he was a baby & me & my sister would dress him up in our dresses & play around.

It mainly affected me during lockdown as I needed space & he just wanted someone to play with but I never cared. Now I can see & I would never want to not have siblings as – I get older. I realise how lonely it can get to lock yourself up with work so my family is something that I value & I’m glad it changed.

Something that will never change

The thing that I return to are the big breakfasts on Sunday mornings.

We wake up late at around 11, we get breakfast ready, we have a Turkish breakfast and talk about everything that has happened from my mom complaining about her clients, to my dad educating us, to my brother talking about footy, and we just listen.
